Esther recently reviewed Caris magazine, and tells us what she thinks.
Caris is a recently launched magazine for 11-16 year old girls, with a more Christian approach to its content, designed just like any other teen magazine, with a bright, glossy cover. On the inside the pages and articles are colourful, and look appealing to read, with plenty of pictures to keep you engaged.
The articles featured are more relevant to the age and Christian lifestyles of the readers than most typical girls magazines. However, I think parts of Caris are too young for the 15 or 16 year old readers, as some of the language can seem patronising.
The advice and general image given are a much better influence on teenage girls than the kind of stories that are featured in other magazines for the age group, especially the articles in the ‘Soul Space’ section. I think it’s also good that Caris features articles that tackle world issues, such as climate change, that are relevant to everyone and need more attention.
I think the magazine is quite expensive for its size, but taking into account the small number of adverts this is understandable. Caris can be bought as a group subscription for a lower price, which is more reasonable.
In general the magazine is fitting to the target market, and puts across the right image for a Christian magazine, without being overpowering.
